Can a Puppy Wear a Prong Collar at 10 Weeks?

Can a puppy under six months wear a prong collar?

Yes. Being under six months doesn’t automatically make a puppy too young.

Dante was 10 weeks old the first time I attached a leash to his prong collar.

I had several reasons for starting that young.

He was training to become my service dog, so I needed to guide him without a lot of leash pressure or physical handling.

I also wanted to teach the leash boundary before pulling became a habit. I didn’t see a reason to let him practise pulling for months and then try to fix it later.

Willow had already changed how I looked at prong collars. Before using one with her, I didn’t believe they could benefit nervous, fearful, or anxious dogs.

She proved me wrong.

The clearer pressure allowed me to communicate with less force and less physical handling.

By the time I brought Dante home, I believed the prong collar was literally the gentlest leash-and-collar option I could use with him.

I trusted the tool that much.

I also wanted firsthand experience with my own puppy before recommending it to clients. Dante was a puppy I knew well. I knew his confidence, temperament, body language, and normal reactions.

So, what happened when I attached the leash?

Dante walked until he reached the end.

Then he stopped.

That was it.

No panic. No fight. No dramatic reaction.

He felt the leash boundary and stopped moving forward. I didn’t correct him back into position, ask him to heel, or pop the leash.

After everything I’d considered, the actual moment was completely anticlimactic.

His lack of reaction was the lesson.

If you want to teach your puppy clear leash boundaries before pulling becomes a habit, the Puppy Leash Manners Blueprint shows you how to teach slack and know when to wait, help, or end the session.

Hey Reader, Ever told your dog “off”... and got a blank stare? Here’s why it happens: Your timing’s off. Or your follow-through’s fuzzy. Dogs live in the now. If a reward or correction happens even two seconds too late, they won’t connect it to the behavior. You just confused them. But timing isn’t enough. Consistency is what makes it stick. Use the same word every time.Enforce the same rule every time.Make sure everyone in your house does the same. Dogs are pattern masters. If the pattern is...

The past few years have been hard. I lost my home base. I had to rehome one of my Dobermans. I’ve been rebuilding from the ground up. But through all of it, something’s kept me going: A mission bigger than me—and bigger than dog training alone. 🐾 Willow’s Wish Doberman Rescue (WWDR) is the nonprofit I started to help Dobermans who don’t have anywhere else to go—especially dogs with behavior or medical issues that shelters won’t take, or will euthanize. 🖤 DoberMerch Designs (DMD) is my...
